A conventional name for a ritual to appease the chthonic powers and to ward off evil from private places (homes, shops, workshops). It usually involved digging a shallow pit, in which vessels—probably containing liquid and solid offerings, along with pieces of animal meat—were burned. Some of them were miniature table and cooking vessels and may have held symbolic significance. In some cases, the burning and/or the bones of the animals were missing, and the offering was limited to a few vessels.
